Ortho-McNeil Neurologics makes prescription drug Topamax.  It is used to treat epileptic seizures in adults.  The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently designated Topamax under Pregnancy Category D.  Human data has shown an increased risk of harmful side effects of Topamax– birth defects amongst children whose mothers take the drug during pregnancy.

The most common side effects of Topamax are the birth defects cleft-lip and cleft-palate.  Cleft-lip is an abnormal facial development that results in a gap that separates the upper lip into two parts. This most commonly appears directly below the nose. Another potential side effect of topamax is cleft-palate. Cleft-palate occurs when the two parts of the skull that form the roof of the mouth (hard palate) do not properly join. Additionally the soft-palate is not joined. In most cases of cleft-palate, cleft-lip also occurs.  Surgery can correct these birth defects, especially when undertaken in early childhood – if not soon after birth.

If your child suffers from Topamax cleft-palate or Topamax cleft-lip, contact our Topamax legal team about filing a Topamax birth defect lawsuit.
